Anglesey
From the General Manager
Welcome to the Anglesey Aluminium Metal Limited (AAM) website. As an organisation we are committed to open, transparent communication with our local community and stakeholders and see this website as a window into our business.
AAM has been operational for over 30 years and we are continually seeking to learn and change to ensure we meet or exceed our commitments to our stakeholders, be they employees, the community or shareholders.
Our website will give you a glimpse of what is happening at our smelter, which is situated on the picturesque Isle of Anglesey. If you have any comments or wish to receive additional information please email our community relations officer Margaret Tracey.

Operation overview
Anglesey Aluminium Metal Limited (AAM) is jointly owned by Rio Tinto (51 per cent) and Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation (49 per cent) and began operating in 1971. AAM is considered to be one of the top performing smelters in the world for the cell technology employed. To produce aluminium we use an electrolytic process requiring large quantities of electricity.
Alumina (produced from bauxite ore) and calcined coke are our major raw material streams and over 330,000 tonnes are imported from various sources including Sardinia, Jamaica and Ireland. Consignments of coke are generally sourced from the North East of England and India. AAM produces finished products that include 500 kilogram ingot, extrusion billet and rolling ingot. These are shipped throughout the United Kingdom and into Europe. The smelting process is the third stage in the aluminium production process. Click here to read more about the smelting process.
The health and safety of all employees, contractors and visitors is a high priority for the smelter. Our aim is to achieve zero injuries. To help effectively manage the environmental activities, AAM has implemented the international standard ISO14001 Environmental Management System (EMS). AAM received certification in March 2001 and continues to maintain these requirements. Internal and external audits are carried out on the EMS to ensure system compliance and continuous improvement across the smelter operation.
