Our partners
Great Barrier Reef Foundation
In late 2005 Rio Tinto Aluminium joined together with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation to form the Future Reef partnership. This collaborative research partnership investigates the potential impact of increasing levels of carbon dioxide on Queensland's Great Barrier Reef. Ocean acidification occurs when increasingly large quantities of carbon dioxide are absorbed into the ocean.
As part of the partnership, Rio Tinto employees collect baseline data for the research programme by participating in expeditions to The University of Queensland's Heron Island Research Station. More information about the partnership can be accesses in the employee participation programme fact sheet and the ocean acidification research programme fact sheet.

Funds
Rio Tinto Aluminium Community Fund
The Rio Tinto Aluminium Community Fund was established in 2002 to support community-initiated projects that address skills development, sustainable employment and the environment. An Advisory Board makes funding decisions based upon whether a project address the key objectives, will generate long term benefits that do not currently exist and has the potential to become self-sustaining. To apply for funding or for further information about the Rio Tinto Aluminium Community Fund contact the Fund's Executive Assistant Michelle Hunter.
Consultative Committees
Rio Tinto Aluminium Bell Bay Consultative Committee
Rio Tinto Aluminium's support for the community is provided through a range of programmes including the Rio Tinto Aluminium Bell Bay Community Assistance Programme, community partnerships, in-kind support and the donation of resources. In 2006, Rio Tinto Aluminium Bell Bay launched the Community Grants initiative to provide financial support for not-for-profit organisations and individuals currently not eligible to receive funding under existing Rio Tinto Aluminium community programmes. The Bell Bay smelter's support for our neighbours and the broader Tasmanian community is built on a foundation of mutual respect and long-term commitment. Our support is directed towards improving quality of life, particularly through encouraging the pursuit of excellence and building community capacity.
