The remelt product range includes five alloy groups - standard purity, high purity, foundry, alloyed and electrical conductor (EC). These products are supplied either as standard ingots or t-bar in a range of sizes. These alloy groups are supplied in a range of standard alloys, however customer specific requirements can also be accepted. Rio Tinto Aluminium's remelt products are suitable for a wide range of applications and are designed to meet relevant international standards for each product group. The product range is designed to optimise end users' productivity and product quality requirements.

Casting technology

1. Standard purity ingot
Rio Tinto Aluminium standard purity ingot is mainly cast in Gautschi open mould casting machines. The molten aluminium is poured into the water cooled moulds on a continuous belt using the latest underpour distribution technology resulting in a clean, oxide free surface of 22.5 kg ingot exhibiting consistent weight and shape. The ingot is automatically stacked into bundles of approximately one tonne, then steel strapped for safe transport.

2. Foundry ingot
Foundry alloys can be provided in the same 22.5 kg Gautschi ingot described above or in smaller eight kilogram or 12 kg ingot cast on a remetal variable size ingot machine. This machine also uses open moulds with underpour technology on a continuous belt with a water deluge cooling system and results in a clean and uniform ingot. This ingot is also automatically stacked into bundles of approximately one tonne using plastic strapping.

3. T-bar
Rio Tinto Aluminium supplies a range of purity, EC, foundry and three per cent Silicon alloys in t-bar shapes which are cast using the Vertical Direct Chill (VDC) casting process. This process involves pouring the molten metal into continuous casting moulds with direct water chilling onto the cast surface resulting in strands of t-bar up to five metres in length with clean oxide free surfaces. These strands are then cut to length to provide an easily handled remelt product in sizes in the range of 680 to 1500kgs.
